My Recent Reads Fall 2019

Long time no see!

How have you been? I’ve been really busy the last year, but I’ll let you ready about that on Patchwork Journey. Today you’re here to read about what books I’ve read lately, and to be honest there have been A LOT since I updated you last. WE aren’t going to go through all those though, so lets just talk about the last 10 and my current read.

Vicious by VE Schwab

220px-Vicious_(2013)_V._E._SchwabIf you don’t know Vicious is about two boys/adults who used to be roommates in school but then after an incident the two become enemies. After years in jail (and then breaking out) Victor and his new friend Eli are on the hunt for his old friend.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect when going into this book. It was on sale and I had head the title so I went for it. I ended up not loving it but not hating it. It was good and if I knew what I was walking into I would have liked it more.

Rage by Cora Cormack

downloadRage is the second book in the Stormheart series where we follow Princess Aurora in her quest to gain powers over storms, save her kingdom, and claim her title as queen. Due to this being the second book in the series I don’t want to say much about the plot, because I don’t want to spoil the first book Roar.

I LOVED this book though. I love the first one and I loved the second one partly because of the magic system. I think that it’s really unique and I haven’t read anything like it before. I also love Aurora as a character. The only thing I don’t like is the romantic relationship, but I’m able to overlook that because of the magic system.

Capturing The Devil By Kerri Maniscalco

download (1)Capturing the Devil is the fourth and final book in the Stalking Jack the Ripper Series that follow Audrey Rose a she not only battles society norms but fights to put murderers behind bars though detective work. This story takes place in New York after someone who seems to copy the Jack The Ripper Murders is let loose in the city. They then travel to Chicago in an attempt to follow the murderer.

I have really liked this entire series and I am so sad to see this series end. I’m glad that they didn’t drag it out though, because it ended in a way that if they really wanted to it could continue. I’m ok if it doesn’t continue though. It has been a wild ride where my heart was yanked in several directions and as much as I hate to see it end it’s ok. I did love this book and I have already re-read it.  I’m that person apparently.

Loki: Where Mischief Lies download (2)

This was a fun read. I enjoyed every second of it and hope that there are more books set in the marvel universe in the future. (Like full of words books. I already want to read the comics). I don’t really know how to describe this book. It’s about Loki in London in like the 1930’s or 1940’s and there is a run of “murders” where the bodies are decomposing and are warm and don’t seem dead. So no one knows what’s going on. It was a fun read though, 100% would read again.

See you soon,

December 2017 Wrap Up

I really liked Shadow and bone to be honest. I think that it was such a unique universe that has so much area to be explored that I couldn’t help but love it. I also really liked to examine the motives of the individual characters because I think that it puts a lot into the individual characters and what they do. I really want to look into the Darkling’s background more because he just overall is an interesting character that I think deserves to have the spotlight a little bit more. I hope to learn more about him with the next books but I’m not going to really hold my breath on that. Honestly, I didn’t have the next book I pry wouldn’t actually continue the series, regardless of how great the world is. I didn’t like the real overall story very much and I didn’t find myself connecting to the individual characters. I did start to like the two main characters’ relationship once they left the palace, but I wasn’t too overall interested in the main story because it was pretty normal where a girl gets taken away by a prince and goes to live happily ever after. I enjoyed the story overall but I didn’t really like it enough to continue it.

I did like The Lightning Thief a lot, but I’m not able to give it all five stars. I honestly loved the audio book and can’t wait to continue it via OverDrive. The biggest drive for me to continue this series is because I really like to look at Mythology and I find it one of the most interesting subjects I have ever had the pleasure to learn about while I was in school. I enjoyed the story and I really liked how many of the demigods had learning disabilities outside of camp because it’s such an amazing representation for people, especially the marketing audience, to have in great books because it makes them seem more real to the individual. I also just liked it as a “new classic” that many people read and is known by most people if not just by the basics of the story. I was afraid that this story had been inflated beyond a point of being able to live up to its hype, but it was great and I really did like it.

I liked the idea of Witch and Wizard, I really did, but I just got so bored halfway through that I couldn’t finish it. I loved the production of the audiobook too, but it was such a slow story that I wasn’t able to complete it. I ended up stopping around 3/4 of the way through and I just haven’t been able to pick it back up. Because of this I’m giving this a 2/5 stars even though I ended up DNF-ing it. It honestly made me sad that I had to do that, but what are you going to do sometimes? I completed most of it so that I feel like I can discuss it and talk about it, which is why I gave it a review but it just wasn’t my favorite read by any stretch of the means.

I LOVED Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children. I flat out loved this book and I can’t explain to you how happy I am that I read this book. I fell in love with all of the characters and I can’t wait to read more about them in the next books. I also really like that the inspiration behind this story was pictures that the author found AND that the pictures were included in the book, just because it’s such a unique thing. I also love seeing Jacob and Emma together, they’re so cute and Olive is hands down my favorite because she is so sweet. I just love this book, so watch out for a video and blog post that’s just me gushing about it.

I don’t know why I really read Burning Glass to be honest. It seemed interesting and the cover was cool but it just didn’t hold my attention and I don’t know why. The story was good, and when I sat down and forced myself to listen to it the story was great. The story overall was really good and I really enjoyed it. I loved the character and the settings, but just overall this book just wasn’t my favorite and I don’t know why.

November Wrap Up

I felt so good about this month, until I looked at it really and found that most everything was an audiobook that I got from the Library.

Thanks to my mom I found out that my local Library actually loans out audiobooks that you can download onto your phone and can listen to. Since discovering this I found that I don’t listen to the radio as much anymore, and my reading has been really good this month! I’m hoping that December is fewer audio books and luckily I’m no longer going to have NaNoWriMo to do so that’s helpful.

So what did I read this month?
