My Recent Reads Fall 2019

Long time no see!

How have you been? I’ve been really busy the last year, but I’ll let you ready about that on Patchwork Journey. Today you’re here to read about what books I’ve read lately, and to be honest there have been A LOT since I updated you last. WE aren’t going to go through all those though, so lets just talk about the last 10 and my current read.

Vicious by VE Schwab

220px-Vicious_(2013)_V._E._SchwabIf you don’t know Vicious is about two boys/adults who used to be roommates in school but then after an incident the two become enemies. After years in jail (and then breaking out) Victor and his new friend Eli are on the hunt for his old friend.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect when going into this book. It was on sale and I had head the title so I went for it. I ended up not loving it but not hating it. It was good and if I knew what I was walking into I would have liked it more.

Rage by Cora Cormack

downloadRage is the second book in the Stormheart series where we follow Princess Aurora in her quest to gain powers over storms, save her kingdom, and claim her title as queen. Due to this being the second book in the series I don’t want to say much about the plot, because I don’t want to spoil the first book Roar.

I LOVED this book though. I love the first one and I loved the second one partly because of the magic system. I think that it’s really unique and I haven’t read anything like it before. I also love Aurora as a character. The only thing I don’t like is the romantic relationship, but I’m able to overlook that because of the magic system.

Capturing The Devil By Kerri Maniscalco

download (1)Capturing the Devil is the fourth and final book in the Stalking Jack the Ripper Series that follow Audrey Rose a she not only battles society norms but fights to put murderers behind bars though detective work. This story takes place in New York after someone who seems to copy the Jack The Ripper Murders is let loose in the city. They then travel to Chicago in an attempt to follow the murderer.

I have really liked this entire series and I am so sad to see this series end. I’m glad that they didn’t drag it out though, because it ended in a way that if they really wanted to it could continue. I’m ok if it doesn’t continue though. It has been a wild ride where my heart was yanked in several directions and as much as I hate to see it end it’s ok. I did love this book and I have already re-read it.  I’m that person apparently.

Loki: Where Mischief Lies download (2)

This was a fun read. I enjoyed every second of it and hope that there are more books set in the marvel universe in the future. (Like full of words books. I already want to read the comics). I don’t really know how to describe this book. It’s about Loki in London in like the 1930’s or 1940’s and there is a run of “murders” where the bodies are decomposing and are warm and don’t seem dead. So no one knows what’s going on. It was a fun read though, 100% would read again.

Shadow and Bone By Leigh Bardugo

A few months ago I finally got around to reading Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo and  I’m very conflicted about how I feel about it. On the positive side I really did like the story and I got through the first two thirds in a day or two, but then I just sat on it and I didn’t end up loving it by the end. The story itself was very compelling, and I loved it, but I felt like many of the characters fell sort of flat and I didn’t really end up feeling like many of them grew over time. I am still going to continue with the series for two reasons. 1) I have the first book 2) I’m hoping the characters grow and become more 3D in the second book.

img_3608.jpgShadow and Bone is set in the Grisha universe, where the elite of the population have abilities to manipulate, create, or change things around them. Shadow and Bone is mainly about an orphan named Alina who lives in a country named Ravka and worked as a map maker for the military. Her best friend, Mal, knew her since she arrived at the orphanage and followed Alina as they both continue their paths in the military. That is, until the day they are sent on a mission to attempt to cross the fold, a great darkness that has taken part of the country hostage. While in the fold Alina releases a great power that fends off not only the darkness of the fold, but the monsters that live inside it. The problem? She didn’t know it was there, she doesn’t know how to control it, and she’s taken from her friend to be taken to the small palace and serve the Darkling. That’s where this story begins. During the book we follow Alina as she spends her time at the small palace developing her power, growing stronger, and falling in love.

Overall this book got a four out of five stars because I love the universe and the story was entertaining. I didn’t love the characters as much as I hoped to, but they have a lot of growing to do and I think in the next book is when that I will really happen because they are left to a much more difficult situation than what they’ve been used to. I also hope to watch as their relationship grows a little more.

Warning: stop here if you haven’t read the book. I recommend it if you’re looking for a new fantasy series, and I really do hope that you read it, but if you don’t want spoilers stop here. If you’re read it, keep going.
